Music to our ears

We all know the cheesy favourites – White Christmas, Santa Baby – but what about an expertly compiled, alternative Christmas playlist? We asked American audio experts Grado to recommend their top 20 songs for driving home for Christmas, and the list they came back with didn’t disappoint.

Grado driving playlist

For 65 years, the Grado family has been building industry-leading phono cartridges and headphones by hand in their lab in Brooklyn New York. They listen to all sorts of music all the time, so seemed the perfect people to ask for this playlist. Jonathan Grado explains: “To accurately test our headphones we have to listen to every genre of music; we can’t second guess what our customers will listen to so we have to cover all bases and it’s vital that every sound is as accurate as possible. This means our playlists vary from jazz to rock to pop to classic and everything in between. The quality of the sound is what matters to Grado.”

It’s not your average ‘driving home for Christmas’ playlist and contains both festive and non-festive songs to keep you guessing whilst driving. There’s no Chris Rea crooning about being ‘top to toe in tailbacks’, but then we all have that one already, don’t we? And of course ‘average’ has never been something Lands’ End signs up to, so why start now?

Grado Playlist

We can honestly say we’ve really enjoyed listening to the playlist and learning about some new artists. So if you’ve got a long drive this Christmas and are bored of the ‘usual’ or ‘average’, then we think you should give it a go.

And for those of you that missed it when we introduced Grado back in September (as part of our ‘American Classics’ menswear series), click here to read their story. Since we last spoke with them owner and father John Grado has been awarded a ‘Founding Father Award for Audio’ by the Los Angeles and Orange County Audio Society, so a huge congratulations to John from everyone at Lands’ End!

Men's Fair Isle Lambswool Jumper

Your long-time favourite and cool-weather essential, our lambswool jumper returns for the season with a more luxurious touch. We've sourced a new yarn that adds loft to the knit, enhancing its natural softness and warmth. We still craft it traditionally, favouring fully fashioned construction over cut and sewn, for a more refined fit and finish. And we still think lambswool is perfect with a splash of pattern, hence this rather splendid fair isle.

Men's Short Sleeve Super-T

Our famous Super-T™ - the 'basic' men's T-shirt that goes above and beyond the call of duty, with carefully detailed, durable construction in combed cotton jersey that's soft, yet has plenty of heft. So much tougher than those flimsy, ten-a-penny tees...
