EMPLOYEE BREAK ROOM: KRIS SPURLEY

We hear what’s on the minds of the people who make Lands’ End great.

This is the Break Room. You know the break room. It’s the place where employees gather to hear the gossip of the day, to dish on what music they’re listening to, and talk about which of their bosses are the best. (…Right?) Today we hear from Kris Spurley. We’ll let her fill you in on the rest.

Name.
Kris Spurley

Title.
Editorial Director for Women’s and Kids’ Divisions

Perfect Sunday morning.
Getting up before the kids, which is never a problem. I have a 17-, 15- and 9-year-old, so the earliest they’re up is maybe 7:30 on a Sunday. I live in the country on this 19-acre farm with woods in front of me. I make a cup of coffee, head to my front porch and just sit and listen to the woods.

What’s the soundtrack to your commute?
I’m a Wisconsin Public Radio fan in my car. My favourite thing to listen to on my ride home is the Moth Radio Hour – a radio show with live storytelling. I actually stay in the car to finish stories. My daughter will come out to knock on the window to ask, “You coming in?” I’m like, “Give me a second. This is my time.”

Last thing you read?
I’m behind, so Tina Fey’s Bossypants is on my bedside table. I can read a chapter at a time and not feel like I’m missing out. If I get a really engrossing novel – I’m done. I read straight through. Some people use Netflix that way. I read books that way.

Favourite Lands’ End product.
I’m not lying: 90% of my wardrobe is Lands’ End. Today I’m wearing Lands’ End loafers, Lands’ End jeans and a Lands’ End linen shirt. I have this gorgeous black cashmere turtleneck sweater that I bought maybe 15 years ago. It’s what I wear when I want to feel my best. If I’m having a bad hair day or didn’t get enough sleep, I pull on my cashmere sweater and I’m fine.

Go-to podcast?
This American Life. Ira Glass is amazing. I’ve always said it’s a bucket list to be Ira Glass’s friend. Again – anything that has to do with storytelling. Though I will say when it was on TV, it kind of ruined it for me.

Talent you wish you had.
Wish I could sing as well as I think I can. It doesn’t stop me, mind you.

If there was one piece of advice you could impart on your kids, what would it be?
Write it down. I’m a fanatic journal writer. You swear you’ll never forget moments, but you always do. I just got back from a little vacation and I filled a notebook. I don’t keep a daily journal because it’s too much pressure, but I have like 8 journals throughout the house because if I think of something I’ll just pick one up. If someone ever tries to put my life story together, it’ll drive them nuts.

Bucket list destination.
Anywhere I can take my family on an incredible vacation. I’d like to take them to Iceland before it gets too touristy.

What do you love about being a mom?
I’m so lucky I have fun kids. They have great personalities. So many parents are happy when they unlock their kid’s music or sports talents, but I was so happy when I learned all three kids were hilarious, witty and had great sarcastic timing.

What’s something you really, really want right now?
More time with the people I love.
